TRAINING RIDES

The St. Catharines Cycling Club offers training rides  year-round.

Training rides are club sanctioned events and therefore only open to St. Catharines Cycling Club members. All riders must have proof of membership with them on the ride.

Riders with OCA membership in other clubs may participate on an occasional basis provided they have made a prior request and been accepted by a member of the club executive beforehand. They must present themselves to the ride leaders at the start of the ride and provide proof of current OCA membership.

If you do not qualify, you will be asked to remove yourself from the ride.

All riders must abide by the St. Catharines Cycling Club Code of Conduct. Riders violating the code will be given warning. Continued violations may result in revoking of ride privileges  or membership termination.

SATURDAY TRAINING RIDES

The SCCC holds A, B and C rides on Saturday mornings.

1) Hilly Ride

New routes for 2024!

Meet up points – Parking lot at Joseph McCaffery Sports Park -8:15am departure. Jordan (behind Inn on the Twenty) – 9:00 am departure.

It is a B/B+ and A rider skill and fitness level training ride. The ride is a loop from 80-100 km in length with short midpoint break either at Tim Hortons in Smithville or Font Cafe in Fonthill. This is a fast paced ride focusing on hill climbing along the Niagara Escarpment and Effingham areas, a fast echelon approaching the midway stops may also take place. The intent of the ride is to supplement an individual training programme by providing the intensity that a group setting can facilitate.

En route, the ride passes through Jordan Village to quickly pick up other riders. If you choose to meet in Jordan, be there no later than 8:45am and be patient as the ride may not show up at exactly the same time each week (due to mechanicals, etc.). The main group will leave Jordan no later than 9:00 am.

2) “C Group”

Meet up points – Parking lot at Joseph McCaffery Sports Park -8:15am departure. Jordan (behind Inn on the Twenty) – 9:00 am departure a C and B rider skill and fitness level training ride.

Routes are about between 60 – 70 km in length and may be a hilly, flat or mixed terrain ride, new routes for 2022 that will be posted soon but a ride leader will guide the group!

This is a no drop ride!

The C Group ride is recommended for:

  1. New SCCC members who are new to group riding and want to develop their bike handling skills and fitness, this is the entry training ride for new SCCC members,
  2. Past members who are wanting to rejoin the SCCC and have great bike handling skills but don’t want to ride at the intensity of the other Saturday and/or Sunday SCCC training rides,
  3. Current members with established bike and group riding skills but don’t want to ride at the intensity of the other Saturday and/or Sunday SCCC training rides.

To encourage riders to challenge themselves on climbs without fear of being dropped, riders will stop, regroup and wait for others at the top of each climb before continuing. Descending the climb and reclimbing is a great way to increase the workout for those who wish.

Echelon Practice:

There may be a rotating paceline (echelon) during the ride with a focus on smooth transitioning to taking the pull.

Exchanging the pull:

Our regular method, known as social paceline is for the front left rider to accelerate and move right to provide draft for the front right rider. The riders in the left line then move up 2 positions to reform the double line formation. This means the group never needs to occupy the full lane and that there is no need for front riders to drift to the back (creating a 4 wide full lane occupation) after their pull.

Please Note

Riders under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Meet up points – Parking lot at Joseph McCaffery Sports Park -8:15am departure & “Downtown” Fenwick  – 9:00 am departure.  Fenwick which is a popular meeting place for the Welland/Fonthill crowd. Wind conditions, etc. will determine when the ride gets there. If you choose to meet in Fenwick, you are advised to be there no later than 9:00am.
