This ride leaves the Fryin’ Guys Fish and Chips on Lake St in St Catharines at 8:15. The ride is a loop from 80-100 km in length with short midpoint break at Tim Hortons in Smithville. This is a fast paced ride focusing on hill climbing along the Niagara Escarpment with a fast echelon approaching the midway stop. The intent of the ride is to supplement an individual training programme by providing the intensity that a group setting can facilitate.
En route, the ride passes through Jordan Village to quickly pick up other riders. If you choose to meet in Jordan, be there no later than 8:40am and be patient as the ride may not show up at exactly the same time each week (due to mechanicals, etc.).
At Smithville Tim Hortons it is not uncommon for the fast and moderate groups to join and form a paceline for the return trip to St. Catharines at a medium pace.
Rides leave from the Rockway Community Center on Pelham Rd at 9:00 (If driving please park away from the building to the East).
This is a 2 climb route – the C group may do the alternate Elcho route into Smithville – maps below
Both routes are about between 60 – 70 km in length. The pace will be quicker in the B group. This ride is meant as a transition ride as riders develop the fitness and skills needed to ride the Saturday Fryin Guys ride (a 3 climb ride and faster paced).
No Drop on Climbs:
To encourage riders to challenge themselves on climbs without fear of being dropped, riders will stop, regroup and wait for others at the top of each climb before continuing. Descending the climb and reclimbing is a great way to increase the workout for those who wish.
There will be a rotating paceline (echelon) during the last 10 km into Smithville with a focus on smooth transitioning to taking the pull. The pace will increase as the ride approaches the Smithville town sign where a sprint may occur. The group may break up somewhat as the pace increases. Fear not, the coffee stop is close by.
Exchanging the pull:
Our regular method, known as social paceline is for the front left rider to accelerate and move right to provide draft for the front right rider. The riders in the left line then move up 2 positions to reform the double line formation. This means the group never needs to occupy the full lane and that there is no need for front riders to drift to the back (creating a 4 wide full lane occupation) after their pull.
If we return from Smithville with the A group (Fryin’ Guys ride) we will follow their 2 up method of exchanging the pull where the front riders accelerate and move wide and then drift backwards to take up position at the rear of the group.
C Route (alternate): 161 m of climbing
B Route: 380 m of climbing
Riders under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a guardian.
